Gabriela ADAMEȘTEANU

GABRIELA  ADAMEŞTEANU is a leading novelist, one of the most prominent Romanian writers of to-day.

Born in 1942, she graduated with a degree in Literature and worked as a editor of the encyclopaedia (1965–1985) and creative literature (1985–1990).

After the revolution, Adameşteanu ran the 22, a highly influential cultural, social and political weekly (1991-2005) and now manages a literary supplement, Bucureştiul Cultural.

As a member of Women’s Editon (1998–2001), an international team of editors organised by the Population Reference Bureau, she championed women’s rights.
She has been a writer in residency in the USA (Iowa City, 1990; Leding House, 2004), France (College pour les traducteurs litteraires, Arles, Dec. 2001–Ian.

2002; Maison des écrivains, Saint-Nazaire, Jan.–March 2004, Villa Marguerite Yourcenar, 2011).

In 2005 she was special guest of the Belles Etrangères festival in France and, in 2006, of the Literaturfestival in Berlin.

She was president of the Romanian Pen Club (2004-2006) and member of the
Jury for Latin Union Prize (2007–2009).

In Romania, her fiction has won many national awards.

She is best selling author, her prose have been reprinted many times and translated in 16 languages, by well-known publishing houses like Gallimard, Lumen Random House, Mondadori, Nothwestern University Press, Europa ş.a .

The texture of her fiction is frequently a synthesis between her precise writing and colloquial speech / stream of consciousness. Her work masterfully highlights the interplay between over arching themes such as memory, history and destiny.

Gabriela Adameşteanu has published four novels, short stories collections, essays and translations.
